Are Bifolding Doors Secure? Here's The Truth

Bifold doors are stunning, but if you've never seen one used as a garage door before, it's natural to wonder whether they're as secure as what you're used to. That’s fair, because these doors are a fairly unusual choice for garages. But garage door security is about much more than just what kind of garage door you have. So this post answers your most common bifolding security questions head-on. You’ll see that modern bifold door hardware and construction have come a long way.

Are Bifold Garage Doors as Secure as Roll-Up Doors?

Most roll-up doors are steel, which sounds strong, but thin-gauge steel panels can flex, and are therefore easily compromised. On the other hand, a solid wood bifold door with quality hardware is genuinely robust. The security of any door depends more on the installation quality than the door type itself. It’s only natural to believe that what we’re familiar with is the most safe. But this just isn’t the case in practice. Often, when it comes to what’s considered standard in modern homes, what we’re most familiar with is the most convenient. And that doesn't automatically mean it is the most safe. Read our even more comprehensive comparison between bifolding garage doors and roll up doors.

Do Bifold Garage Doors Have Weak Points at the Hinge Panels?

It's a logical concern — if the door folds, doesn't that mean there are vulnerable points where it could be forced open? But in practice, the answer is no. While the doors fold outward, the hinges are on the inside, so they can’t be accessed from the outside when the doors are shut. Additionally, we secure the doors with cane bolts, just as we do with carriage doors. The weight of true timber doors also makes a wood bifold door very secure. They’re too heavy and too rigid to be kicked in or forced open.

Are Wood Bifold Garage Doors Weather-Resistant Enough to Stay Secure?

Yes, and weather resistance and security are more connected than they might seem. A door that swells or shrinks with seasonal changes can develop misalignments that compromise both weatherproofing and the integrity of the locking system. So it’s important to know how the wood is prepared and finished. Exterior-grade solid wood doors, with sealed end grain, proper joinery, and a quality exterior finish, are engineered to handle seasonal movement without losing their fit or function. RealCraft doors are built expressly for exterior applications, using wood species and finishing processes suited to the demands of outdoor exposure. It’s important to note that proper maintenance keeps any exterior door performing as intended for decades. So does having a sufficient overhang that protects the door from direct sun and rain exposure. Learn more with our exterior door maintenance guide

What Should I Look for in a Secure Bifold Garage Door?

If security is a priority (and why wouldn’t it be?) here's what to look for when evaluating bifolding garage doors:

  • Solid wood construction: Hollow or composite panels are lighter and cheaper but offer less resistance. Solid wood provides weight, strength, and a naturally high level of structural integrity.
  • Precision installation: Even the best door is only as good as its installation. Proper alignment, shimming, and hardware fitting are essential. So you’ll need to work with an installer who has experience with exterior folding doors, and choose a manufacturer who provides detailed installation guidance.
  • Purpose-built for exterior use: Not all bifold doors are created equal. Interior folding doors are not appropriate for garage applications. Make sure the door and all of its components — like the hinges, weatherstripping, and finish — are rated for exterior use.

RealCraft's custom wood bifold garage doors are designed from the ground up for exterior residential use, with security-grade hardware options and the craftsmanship to back it up.

Bifold garage doors can be every bit as secure as roll-up or carriage-style doors, and sometimes more so. The factors that determine security don’t depend on the door type: namely, construction quality, locking hardware, and installation precision. When those elements are present, a solid wood bifold door is a safe, durable, and genuinely beautiful choice for your garage.
